Small World Music
Report by Afro P.
On Sept. 22 Toronto experienced a trip through time and Los Lobos were the pilots. As part of the Small World Music Festival Los Lobos entertained and had the crowd on its feet. If you were to close your eyes, sit back and listen to the music play you would have heard music from many eras. David Hidalgo hit us up with 1950s style renditions of classic tracks. Hidalgo brings those tunes that get folks dancing at the front of the stage. The show was fire. Hidalgo and crew received three standing ovations during the set. Crazy!! Once Hidalgo was ready to step back as the main man, Caesar Rosas would bring rock lathered with Latin sweetness. Personally these tracks were more my speed. I love the feel of Los Lobos’ fusion. Hidalgo and Caesar had ears and eyes entranced with guitar harmonies when digging into the Latin fusion. You really have to see Los Lobos live to appreciate how they play off each other; timing and instrument mastery at its finest. Having formed Los Lobos in 1973 it is clear their chemistry works and their experience shines through the way they include the crowd and encourage participation. It’s their party as much as it’s ours.
A Little History
Los Lobos’ first major release was 1984's T-Bone Burnett They followed up with By the Light of the Moon in 1987. 1987 also saw the group provide tracks for the film La Bamba, In 1988 they released La Pistola y El Corazón In the late 1980s and through the 1990s the band toured throughout the world. In 1992 Los Lobos put out the creative and experimental Kiko. On the band's twenty-year anniversary they released a two-CD collection entitled Just Another Band from East L.A.

In 1995, Los Lobos released the bestselling record Papa's Dream. In 1996 they released Colossal Head. Moving on to 1999, the band released This Time. The music conglomerate Rhino/Warner in 2000 released the Cancionero: Mas y Mas boxed set.

Los Lobos are three time Grammy winners. They won Best Pop Instrumental Performance, for "Mariachi Suite" from the Desperado movie sound track. They also won Best Mexican-American Performance in 1983 and 1989 for the albums Anselma and La Pistola y El Corazon.
