Long time poet David Fujino says he wants his poems to be out front, not himself as actor. Poetry is written.
Davids poetry falls, intentionally or not, into the broad category of postmodern Language poetry. Wordplay and allusions the thing. What we hear, what we think, what we see, what we feel, becomes the poetry very well.
David reads well. His trumpet playing, the poems and Wills drums create a whole, unique work of the moment where the spaces are as essential as the words. His reading, the rhythm, the variation of volume and pitch open the poems to the listener.
Poems of sound, images, the abstract and the concrete, the imagined, the lived and felt, Japanese Canadian experience, modern city, future city? bio-fueled buses, is it jazz?
